
ABOUT SES AIR QUALITY
SES Air Quality is a consultancy service that specialises in providing expert advice and decision making on air quality matters. We have over 30 years of experience working in this field in New Zealand. Our goal is to provide high quality, personalised service to businesses, government agencies and individuals seeking air quality expertise.

The SES office is based in Wanaka, Otago.
We travel extensively and work throughout the North and South Islands.

PEOPLE
John is founder and director of SES Air Quality. He set up SES in 1999 after working in the air quality field at Environment Canterbury for six years. John obtained a Master of Science degree (first class honours) from the University of Canterbury in 1991 that included the study of climatology.
John is one of New Zealand’s most experienced air quality scientists. He has been working in this field for over 31 years. John is regularly engaged by councils, businesses and submitters to provide expert advice. He has worked as a hearings commissioner for many years and is certified to act as a chairperson. He is a member of the Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ), the professional body for air quality practitioners in Australasia.
As the director of SES Air Quality, John supervises and reviews all work undertaken by the company. He enjoys meeting with clients and providing a personalised service.
John has assessed the environmental effects of emissions to air and reviewed air discharge permit applications for a very broad range of industrial and commercial facilities throughout New Zealand. John is trained and experienced in dispersion modelling (including AERMOD, AUSPLUME and CALPUFF) and various other assessment techniques. He has undertaken numerous assessments of odour, dust, chemical and combustion source discharges. John has provided technical evidence on the effects of discharges to air relating to appeals to the Environment Court.

​John’s work has also included significant technical input to Regional Air Plans and to guidance documents published by councils and central government agencies. He is regularly employed by several councils in New Zealand to undertake expert peer reviews of discharge permit applications.
As an experienced hearings commissioner, John has sat on more than 90 hearings for resource consent applications and plan changes. Many of these hearings have been for significant applications that involved a range of issues beyond air quality impacts. John has chaired numerous hearings, many for major proposals.
Outside of work, you will likely find John exploring the mountains of Otago or out running trails with his partner Diana and dog Baxter.
